About ALEM

Members are committed to complying with the relevant European Standards, the UK Supply of Machinery Regulations and other relevant legislation.

It is very important to ALEM that the industry and end user are both equally aware of the standards and regulations that need to be complied with in order to ensure that all products supplied meet the current UK and European legislation.

The Association covers a range of materials handling equipment which can be seen at the Products page, with members meeting regularly to ensure that they are in agreement with administrative, scientific, legal and commercial matters.  ALEM aims to provide authoritative representation of the views of the members in negotiation with government departments, the Health & Safety Executive and other organisations.
Three words which are especially important to members are Compliance, Quality and Confidence.

Compliance

There is a lot of product on the market that does not meet all the relevant legislation, including for safety.  ALEM members ensure that their products are completely compliant, following the existing technical standards and bearing the CE mark.

Quality

Everybody expects the product they purchase to work as intended, and most do. However, ALEM members realise that quality is just as important, making the right product, with the right materials, so that it will perform as expected over and over again.

Confidence

The aim is that, when buying from an ALEM member, you have complete confidence in the product and after sales service which you will enjoy.  In turn, members are confident that they are supplying a quality product which is in compliance with the law and relevant guidance.

ALEM is a member of the British Materials Handling Federation (BMHF) which allows members to discuss issues with other associations, including those for fork lift trucks, mobile elevating work platform and automated handling systems.   It also gives access to the European Federation of Materials Handling (FEM), comprising thousands of manufacturers from many countries.  This includes the Elevating Equipment product group, where manufacturers and suppliers from different EU member states are able to discuss and agree a joint industry position on matters of European importance.

Members of the Association are very active with the development of technical standards  for their products which reflect the state of the art.  ALEM is represented on all relevant British Standard Institution (BSI) Committees as well as Working Groups of the Comite Europeene de Normalisation (CEN), which is the European standardisation body.
